A History of Britain in 21 Women

The history of Britain, as you’ve never heard it before, through the achievements of twenty- one women whose lives enthral, intrigue and inspire.
Britain has been defined by its conflicts, its conquests, its men and its monarchs. To say that it’s high time that it was defined by its women falls some way short of an understatement.

In this personal selection Jenni Murray draws together the lives of twenty-one women to shed light upon a variety of social, political, religious and cultural aspects of British history, reinvigorating the stories behind the names we all know and reveals the fascinating tales behind those less familiar.

Jenni Murray is a journalist and broadcaster who has presented BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour since 1987. She regularly contributes to various newspapers and magazines, and is the author of several books, including Memoirs of a Not So Dutiful Daughter.

Jenni Murray has invited us to her feast of extraordinary women: queens, artists, writers, musicians, scientists and activists... As incomparable host, Jenni lets her guests display themselves lavishly, telling their own noble or quirky stories while she delicately inserts anecdotes from her own distinguished life... ’ JANET TODD, Professor Emerita, University of Aberdeen
