Tutu out of hospital in time for wife's birthday
Splendid news that Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, was discharged from hospital in Cape Town on Friday after spending two weeks as an in patient undergoing unspecified medical tests.
A statement issued by his office thanked well-wishers and noted that the veteran anti-apartheid campaigner and Nobel laureate would be home in time to celebrate the birthday of his wife, Leah Tutu.
It was the latest in a number of tests and treatments for the archbishop who has been battling prostate cancer for nearly 20 years. It also meant that he had to spend his own birthday - his 87th - in hospital.
Another landmark event that occurred during his hospital stay was last Monday’s annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture which was delivered by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The International Peace Lecture was established in 2011 and is now a major event in the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation’s annual calendar. President Ramaphosa had been asked by the archbishop to reflect on restorative justice 20 years after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
