Over and Out with Blowers on the Beeb
How lovely to hear that ‘dear old thing’ Henry Blofeld reading extracts from his autobiography Over and Out on BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week .
I’ve just listened to the first episode entitled A Tentative and Rather Shy Bat. Delivered in typical and inimitable Blowers style, it was a utterly enjoyable piece of radio, providing an insight into his love of cricket and his early years at the crease.
There will be more bite-sized, 15 minute broadcasts to follow at 09.4am every morning this week. Beautifully written and even more beautifully read, it finds ‘Blowers’ in reflective mood and at his self-deprecating best.
*Henry Blofeld became a cricket writer in 1964 and ten years later graduated to the Test Match Special team, where he commentated on cricket for 43 years. He announced his retirement from the TMS commentary box earlier this year.
He is of course a popular speaker and regularly appears at venues around the country talking about his life, love of cricket and the fascinating career that has helped supply so many wonderful anecdotes and made him something of a national treasure.
