Legendary Radio Times photographer Don Smith remembers June Whitfield
Following my blog last week about lovely June Whitfield, who died aged 93 just before New Year, we had an interesting enquiry from near-legendary Radio Times photographer Don Smith.
Back in the 50s, 60s and 70s Don photographed just about every one of the TV and radio stars of the era including of course June. He was the go-to photographer for the big names, producing countless images and many famous Radio Times covers.
His best known photographs included classic shots of Tony Hancock, the cast of Dad’s Army and Doctor Who. There were many, many more of course.
Which is why, early in the New Year, Don was back in the Radio Times office helping his old employers put together a forthcoming tribute to June Whitfield.
In addition to the photographs held in the RT archive he recalled being invited as a guest to a Hancock Appreciation Society dinner half a dozen years ago. June was also on the celebrity guest list.
The pair hadn’t seen each other for years and had a whale of a time catching up and discussing their memories of working with ‘the lad himself’.
There to capture the moment was sometime Clive Conway photographer Hattie Miles. Did we still have a picture? Of course we did.
