Fake fury as pop-star Aston Merrygold is booted off Strictly?
All is not happy in the Strictly Come Dancing camp it seems. Outrage, fury and astonishment are just three of the descriptions of the reaction from fans after JLS star Aston Merrygold was voted out of the show following last night’s dance-off.
Merrygold had been rated as a seriously good dancer, had ratcheted up the marks throughout the series and was seen as a contender for the final… until the weekend when his Viennese Waltz with partner Janette Manara created a sudden reversal of fortune.
It split the judging panel down the middle with the deciding vote (and ticket home) being delivered by head judge Shirley Ballas who tipped the verdict in favour of keeping rivals Mollie king and her partner AJ Pritchard.
It’s certainly a controversial decision and of course more grist to the Strictly publicity mill. But quite how outraged, furious and astonished the fans really are remains to be seen. I suspect this is social media outrage which roughly translates as “a bit miffed”.
No one loves the febrile atmosphere generated by a furious Twitter feed more than the mainstream media who gleefully go along for the ride.
The Sun even found “a source” who claimed: “It's the biggest shock in the show's history, without a doubt.” Really? I find that really hard to believe.
It’s a dance show for heaven’s sake. Let’s keep some perspective.
