Desmond Tutu - the founding inspiration of RISING Global Peace Forum
It is gratifying to hear that the name of lifelong peace and social justice campaigner Archbishop Desmond Tutu came in for much deserved praise at the RISING Global Peace Forum at Coventry Cathedral last Wednesday (September 12th)
The forum, which was attended by 200 delegates from around the world helped build on Coventry’s already established reputation as a centre for reconciliation and the promotion of sustainable peace.
Nobel Peace Prize Winner Tutu is seen as the founding inspiration and sponsor of RISING which was launched in 2015 as a partnership between Coventry Cathedral, Coventry City Council and the city’s university as represented by the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations
Among keynote speakers attending the 2018 forum were two of Archbishop Tutu’s fellow Nobel Peace Prize winners Nobel Peace Prize winners: former President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf - Africa’s first female head of state - and Yemeni based human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman.
Other keynote speakers at the event, which carried the theme Anatomy of Peace, included former Irish Prime Minister John Bruton who was heavily involved in the Northern Ireland peace process.
