Dates for diaries as opera star Lesley Garrett returns for 2021
The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating effect on the theatre industry. Venues are dark, performers are without work and producers are wondering what can be salvaged from the wreckage of months of lockdown and the uncertainty of ongoing social distancing. From classical theatre to end of the pier style variety, everyone has suffered.
Nowhere perhaps is the pain felt more than in the top-end world of opera where eye-watering sums of money are involved in mounting productions…and losing them.
Aficionados are offered small consolation as classic productions are streamed online and there is also the chance to reflect on past classic performances.
It’s was good to see that when the Met streamed Un Ballo in Maschera recently Opera News was moved to share what considered to be the ten essential video clips from Verdi's tragic middle-period opera of disguise, torment and love.
It was nice to see that our good friend and frequent Clive Conway Productions contributor Lesley Garrett was included.
Her recommend a clip same from the year 2000 and her BBC series Lesley Garrett Tonight. It features the hugely popular soprano appearing alongside Ramón Vargas singing a passionate “Parigi o cara,”
It’s a timely reminder of what a fine performer Lesley is and what a fabulous career she as enjoyed.
It is also a reminder that when the Covid-19 contagion struck Britain’s most popular soprano was poised to play a series of evenings of song, reminiscences and chat with CCP.
The An Audience with Lesley Garrett shows, complete with behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes giving audiences a unique insight into her life on the stage, had to be postponed.
But now a raft of thirteen evenings are scheduled to go ahead next year, starting with an evening at The Jersey Opera House on 1st May.
