Close to home: Gyles Brandreth on Hamlet the ultimate family drama
Last week I wrote about our good friend Gyles Brandreth waxing lyrical about the inimitable qualities of Prince Philip as the 96-year-old stepped down from full public duties.
What many people don’t realise is that Gyles - long-standing theatre professional, entertainer, writer, broadcaster, journalist, former MP and 24 carat raconteur - is currently deeply involved with another Prince.
The royal personage in question is none other than Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. For Gyles is about to stage a new production of Shakespeare’s famous play at The Park Theatre in London.
And it’s going to be a real family affair featuring not only Gyles himself but his son Bene and his daughter-in-law Kosher Engler. The production at which opens on 22nd August and runs until 16th September 2017 is described as “Hamlet stripped to its core” with three members of one real-life family exploring the Bard’s epic drama with domestic tragedy at its heart.
It should be great. For Brandrerth is a self-confessed Hamlet obsessive who admits to once watching the 1948 film version starring Laurence Olivier five times in a single week.
