One of the problems during this era of fake news is how to set the record straight when hundreds, maybe thousands of people, are falling hook, line and sinker for a blatant untruth.

After all there are a zillion people out there whose default reaction to anything on social media that might be even vaguely credible is to believe it. Hence it was interesting to watch the reaction when recent false reports claiming that Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu had died while on holiday in Texas starting appearing on the internet.

Like Mark Twain before him reports of his death were greatly exaggerated.

The 86-year-old Nobel laureate was in fact in fine fettle at home in the Western Cape and his office posted a statement underlining this fact. For most people this put the record straight.

But there are always a few conspiracy theorists around who are likely to say: ’Well, they would say that wouldn’t they.’

Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah decided to stop the rumours once and for all by heading out for a family lunch at one of their favourite Indian restaurants in Cape Town.

A picture was duly posted of a healthy looking Arch and his wife enjoying tandoori chicken and butter naan at the Indian Chapter restaurant in Bloubergstrand.  It bore a message from restaurateur Prim Reddy that stated: “What an absolute surprise to see Desmond Tutu with his beautiful family for lunch at Indian Chapter . . . feeling so special.”
