An evening with broadcaster, writer and environmentalist Kate Humble
Broadcaster, writer and environmentalist Kate Humble will be at the Buxton Festival in Debyshire on Thursday (11th July) with her ever popular An Evening with Kate Humble to the Buxton Festival in Derbyshire.
It will be an evening that offers the chance to hear about her highly acclaimed new book, Thinking on my Feet, her fascinating life working with wildlife, the far-flung places she’s visited and the inspiring people she has met on her travels.
Best known for BBC programmes like Springwatch and Autumnwatch, Kate will also offer a glimpse ‘behind the camera' as she describes how her programmes are made, regaling her audience with fascinating anecdotes about filming.
As well as being a farmer, writer, activist, entrepreneur and leading TV presenter Kate is an engaging speaker and a thoughtful and insightful writer. Thinking On My Feet has already earned rave reviews from adventurers and travellers like Ranulph Fiennes, Simon Reeve and Benedict Allen. Kate herself finds that a daily walk works wonders for her sense of well-being and helps her organise her busy life. She says: “I solve all sorts of problems, formulate ideas and work things out to that gentle rhythm of self-propelled movement.”
As specialist in science, wildlife and rural affairs, Kate travels a great deal but home is a small holding in Wales where she lives “in permanently muddy jeans” with husband Ludo and a variety of feathered and furry livestock. In 2011 she and Ludo set up 'Humble by Nature' a rural skills school on a working farm in the Wye Valley.
Her upbringing was perhaps the perfect preparation for her chosen lifestyle. She enjoyed what she describes as a 'proper childhood' - building camps, racing snails, climbing trees, interspersed with trips to A&E to patch things up when they broke. At 18 she left school and home, and worked odd jobs for a year to fund a year travelling in Africa, which, she says, taught her far more than she would ever have learnt at university.
