Former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair - he held the post from 2005 to 2008 - made headlines when he stepped down from the post after clashing with London Mayor Boris Johnson.
A career police officer with a spectacular service history he had originally joined the Metropolitan Police in 1974, under the High Potential Developer Scheme for Graduates. He worked his way up through the ranks receiving the Queen’s Police Medal in 1999. He was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours of 2003.
Blair quickly gained a reputation for being a "thinking man's policeman". He called for more female, ethnic minority and gay recruits.
But as commissioner he also became mired in a number of controversies including the protests that followed the killing of innocent electrician, Jean Charles de Menezes, when armed officers mistook him for a suicide bomber.
Blair was appointed a cross-bench life peer, becoming Baron Blair of Boughton in May 2010.
