Enter a world of powerful women, gossip and intrigue and above all the elegance and splendour of a 19th century Parisian musical soiree via a programme of music, theatre and poetry.
A cast of 5 performers (a pianist, a violinist, two singers and an actor) introduce the beautiful music, poetry and drama as well as some of the “hot” topics of the time (banned poetry, love affairs, emerging scandalous artists) through a scripted dialogue and live performances. Audiences meet real historical characters - leading composers and performers, poets, social figures and glamorous salon hosts.
The performers interact with the audience throughout the evening and create a relaxed, informal and intimate social gathering, reproducing the musical soirees of the period.
The music in this programme is mainly French: songs, violin and piano music by Fauré, Debussy, Duparc alongside some pieces by Elgar and operetta – Fledermaus by Strauss.
The recited poetry is by one of the leading and scandalous poets of the time: Charles Baudelaire.
This show is ideal for intimate venues in a room setting with chairs laid out around a grand piano but can work perfectly as a traditional performance on a theatre stage.
